Loch Arklet Photoshoot

September 3rd, 2008

Yesterday I drove up to the area just West of Aberfoyle and had a good look around Loch Ard, Chon, Arklet, Katrine and Lomond. The weather was … variable. That’s probably the kindest way to describe it. Regardless, a little dedication and patience paid off and as this was the first true landscape shoot I’ve done in over two and a half years, I’m really quite pleased with the results.

These four photos were all taken overlooking Loch Arklet as it just happened we got a great burst of light around this time and rather thick heavy cloud for much of the rest of the time. The above photo has been converted to a selenium style effect while the three below are as taken.

I am very much a photographer rather than “visual artist” and therefore prefer to do as much as possible while taking the photograph, leaving post processing to be as minimal as possible. There is, however, absolutely nothing wrong with taking a mediocre photograph and then processing it so heavily it ends up looking great, quite frankly I would like the skill to be able to do that myself at times!

I am looking to do another shoot in this area towards the end of September or early October, possibly taking in a sunset on day one and sunrise the next. A little more generous weather would be great so I can cover the area better … we’ll see what happens.

    Dear Calum,

I’m no photographer but think your photographs of Loch Arklet look amazing. This view is under threat as Forestry Commission are planning to plant all sides. We on the other hand would like to see it remain as is and have been in talks with FCS for a year now and fear they my still go ahead with their planting plan.
We are now in the process of producing a web site, on-line petition and blog site to muster up as much support as possible to stop this planting.
We hope to have the sites up and finished by Monday 24th Nov 2008.
If you feel you could offer your support please sign our e-petition, and let other like-minded people know about this campaign.
Can we use you photos in our image gallery for our web site?
    regards, Scott
